The best Christmas gift is the one still in use by March. Run each idea through the quick test below, then pick by who is on your list. We finish with the December details that catch people out in Singapore, from the parcel rush to the monsoon rain.
A quick test: will it actually get used?
Gifts that end up in a cupboard were often chosen for Christmas morning rather than the person's normal week. Picture yours on an ordinary Tuesday in March and ask four questions.
- Where will it live? If you cannot picture its spot, it will probably end up in a drawer.
- Does it replace something? A better version of a thing they use daily gets picked up without a second thought.
- Does it ask for effort? Anything that needs assembling or booking can wait for months, so do that part for them.
- Would they choose it? Aim for something they like but never get round to buying.
Two yeses is a safe pick. No yeses, and you may be buying next year's regift.
Christmas gift ideas by who is on your list
Parents
Upgrades beat novelties here. Replace the umbrella that has seen too many storms, or frame a good family photo from this year. Time counts too: book the Christmas lunch, then do the driving.
A partner
You already know what they complain about. Maybe it is a fraying wallet, or earbuds that die halfway through the MRT ride home. Fix that. If you give an experience instead, book the date and put it in both calendars.
Friends
Small and usable wins, like coffee or tea they already drink, or something for their desk. A small candle works too, and you can decorate one yourself at our Bugis Street DIY bar, which takes walk-ins. For gifts with more of you in them, see our personalised gifts guide.
Kids
Christmas lands in the long break: MOE's school terms for 2026 put the year-end holidays from 21 November to 31 December. A craft kit or an outing gets used the same week. Our kids' candle decorating sessions are for ages 6 and up.
The office gift exchange
Choose something anyone could use at a desk. Skip strong scents, since the gift may end up in a shared space.

Made by you, or made together
A handmade gift works when you know the person well. At a White Pixies candle making workshop you create a custom scent and pour your own soy candle, guided by an instructor. Book in November and the gift is ready before the courier rush. Or bring the person along and make the afternoon the present, a good plan for a wet weekend (see our indoor activities guide). Our personalised gift guide compares buying with making.
Timing and travel in December
- Order early. SingPost treats the stretch from the 9.9 sales through to Christmas as its peak eCommerce season, so aim to have online orders in hand by early December.
- Keep it out of the heat. Chocolate and candles soften in a car parked in the sun, and a shaped candle can lose its detail. Carry them in with you, and have parcels sent where someone is home.
- Pack for rain. The Meteorological Service Singapore notes higher rainfall from November to January. A paper gift bag can go soft between the MRT exit and the door, so carry a foldable bag.
- Plan the journey. Christmas Day is a Friday this year, so you may visit more than one home over the long weekend. Boxed gifts survive a Grab boot or a crowded train better than loose, fragile ones.
Giving a candle? It can stay unlit as an ornament. If they light it, use a heat-safe surface away from curtains, children and pets, and never leave it burning unattended.
Frequently asked questions
What are practical Christmas gift ideas in Singapore?
Better versions of things people use every day, or food and drink they already enjoy. In December, a sturdy umbrella or something that keeps kids busy over the school holidays gets used straight away.
When should I order Christmas gifts in Singapore?
Earlier than feels necessary. The weeks before Christmas fall inside the peak parcel season, so aim to have online orders in hand by early December.
Can I leave candles or chocolate in the car?
Avoid it. Both soften in a car parked in the sun, and a shaped candle can lose its detail. Carry them with you and take them inside as soon as you arrive.
